State Board of Education Awards $1.47 Million in Grants

The State Board of Education is providing grants to a number of schools across the state in an effort to make our children better readers.

Friday, the board voted to award $1.47 million in grants to help 34 public schools meet the reading requirements. Beginning this year, 3rd graders who cannot read at grade level by the end of the year will automatically be held back. The board hopes these grants will allow certain schools to help their most at risk students.

Six Coastal elementary schools will receive a portion of the grant money, one in Biloxi, one in Harrison County, one in Moss Point, two in the Pascagoula School District, and one in Pass Christian. Statewide, 46% of 3rd graders cannot read on grade level.
