Failing Roof on Mary C. O’Keefe Center to be Repaired

Ocean Springs aldermen have approved obtaining a $250,000 loan from Community Bank to repair the failing roof on the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center.

City officials say that there have been four or five roofs on the building during its lifetime, each lasting around 20 years, but when the city recently renovated the building, officials opted to go with a spray-on type roof. After leaks began to appear, the city contacted the roofer and found he has left town.

Connie Moran, Mayor of Ocean Springs, says, “So if you have problems with the roof, of course we’re obliged to fix it. We were not successful in addition grant funds, so the prudent thing to do is to borrow the money and address it because we can’t allow leaks to deteriorate the interior.”

Aldermen are expected to approve going out for contractor bids at their January 20th meeting.
