After a woman was raped on the Biloxi Bay Bridge in November, the Gulf Coast Running Club wanted to take action in helping keep women safe while walking and running outside. What they came up with is a panel of speakers, including law enforcement officers, self-defense instructors, and Women’s Center for Nonviolence officials, to all discuss how to safely exercise in the community.
Nancy Phillips of the Gulf Coast Running Club says, “After all of the events that have happened recently, women realize that there are a few little things that they can do to put themselves in a safer situation when they’re out. Not just running, walking, but shopping, in parking lots, pumping gas, any place that they may be alone.”
The event will take place Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s by the Sea. All are invited to attend. There is no cost or fees associated with the seminar.
