Mac Brooks and his family pack up after enjoying one last summer day at the Gulf Islands Water Park. Brooks says, “Just having a little fun in the sun, just having fun with the family, get a little cool water just to break the heat because it’s been a hot summer.”
After Monday, the water park will not see any more splashing until they reopen next season. Mark Moore, General Manager of Gulf Islands Water Park, says, “Labor Day is a big family day, everyone gets together enjoys family time. They feel like it’s their last opportunity, just a great chance to come out and make those last family memories of the summer.”
Especially during the busy tourism season, one of the major draws of the Gulf Islands Water Park is that it is one of the few family attractions along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Brooks also says, “It’s very important so you have time to spend time with just family instead of just doing adult activities. It’s fun to be able to do stuff with your kids.”
The closest water park near the size of Gulf Islands is in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and that’s about 150 miles away. There has been talk in Mobile about opening a park, but Moore tells News 25 they aren’t concerned about potential competition. Moore also says, “Mobile is clearly a great opportunity for someone and they may go in there at some point, but we’re very comfortable here and who we are and our people and our fans. It’s kind of big enough to give the kids a great thrill, but kind of small enough where mom and dad are comfortable with their kids playing by themselves some too.”
The water park is perfect for families like Brooks’. Gulf Islands Water Park will reopen again in early May of next year.
