Saints Must Trim Roster Down to 53 Players

The New Orleans Saints will have to cut their roster down to 53 by 3 p.m. Saturday, per a league mandated deadline. News 25 was at the Superdome Thursday for their final preseason game.

Who will be the second string quarterback? That was one of the major questions going into the final preseason game Thursday night. Luke McCown made a pretty good case for himself, guiding the Saints to their only touchdown drive. McCown says, “I’m not just competing to be the backup. I want to start. Obviously Drew’s got that pretty well underhand, but that’s the mentality you have to have.”

Head Coach Sean Payton says he is impressed with both McCown and Griffin and has not made any final decision, but indicated he wouldn’t be opposed to keeping three quarterbacks on the 53 man roster. Payton says, “I like the fact that both of those guys have really competed. I think both of them have done a lot of good things.”

At the kicker position, it was the Derek Dimke show Thursday night. He hit a 23 yarder and a 49 yarder in the first half. Although Shayne Graham never got a chance to touch the field, he believes he’s shown the coaching staff enough to secure a spot on the team. Graham says, “I feel confident in what I’ve done in camp. Did I want some opportunities? Of course I did. I would have loved to have switched up the halves and had the opportunities in the first half or whatever the case may be.”

Payton says regardless of who makes the final roster, even if it looks great on paper, a winning season is never a given. Payton closes, “This team will play and win or not win. The success they have will be on their merit.”

The Saints open up the regular season on Sunday, September 7th in Atlanta.
