Serena, Federer highlight opening day of French Open

Paris, France ( - Former champions Serena Williams and Roger Federer highlight Sunday's action on the first day of play at the 2014 French Open.

A total of 32 matches are on the schedule for Sunday -- 16 on the men's side and 16 in the women's draw.

Williams, the reigning French champion and also the 2002 winner, will play the third match on Court Chatrier against Frenchwoman Alize Lim. The top-seeded American is gunning for her 18th career Grand Slam title and enters Roland Garros off a victory at the Italian Open earlier this month.

Third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland opens play on Court Chatrier against China's Shuai Zhang, while other women's seeds scheduled for play include Angelique Kerber of Germany and Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. The eighth-seeded Kerber will meet Poland's Katarzyna Piter and the 14th-seeded Suarez Navarro will take on Yuliya Beygelzimer of the Ukraine.

American Venus Williams is also on the docket, scheduled to face Switzerland's Belinda Bencic, while 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy is set to meet Croatia's Ajla Tomljanovic.

Federer, the 2009 men's champion who interrupted Rafael Nadal's run of eight titles in nine years, is seeded fourth this year. The Swiss superstar will play the second match at Court Chatrier against Slovakia's Lukas Lacko.

Other top men on Sunday's schedule are Czech Tomas Berdych, Canadian Milos Raonic, American John Isner and Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The sixth-seeded Berdych will face Canada's Peter Polansky, while the eighth- seeded Raonic will take on Australia's Nick Kyrgios. Isner, seeded 10th this year, will square off against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert and the 13th- seeded Tsonga will battle fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
