Recap: Carolina vs. Chicago

Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Crawford stole two points for Chicago on Monday night.

The Blackhawks goaltender made 43 saves, 15 in the third period, to backstop his team to a 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Andrew Shaw opened the scoring and added an empty-net goal for Chicago, which was coming off a 4-0 loss to Dallas on Saturday and trails Central Division- leading St. Louis by three points with a game in hand.

Two personal milestones were reached by members of the Blackhawks. Captain Jonathan Toews picked up the 500th point of his career with an assist on Shaw's second tally with 40 seconds remaining, and Joel Quenneville earned his 750th win as a head coach.

Anton Khudobin stopped 22 shots for the Hurricanes, who have dropped four straight and seven of their last eight games overall.

The shots were few in number for the Blackhawks in the game's opening 10 minutes, but they sure made them count.

Marcus Kruger fed a pass from behind the Carolina net to a wide-open Shaw, who scored on Chicago's first shot at Khudobin 7:48 into the first period.

Patrick Sharp made it 2-0 on the next shot a little over a minute later. He skated down the middle and redirected a Marian Hossa pass on the rush behind Khudobin at 9:07.

"We weren't sharp early, not sharp," said Carolina coach Bill Peters.

Victor Rask put Carolina on the board at 3:54 of the second period. The Blackhawks were caught in a line change, and a long pass from John-Michael Liles sent Eric Staal in on a breakaway. Crawford turned away the Carolina captain, but Rask was able to bang home the rebound.

The Hurricanes came close to tying the game as Ryan Murphy rang a slap shot off the crossbar midway through the second.

"What we did to them in the first they did to us in the second, and we hung on there in the third," Quenneville said.

Game Notes

Sharp has only three goals since Jan. 30 ... The Blackhawks conclude a four- game road trip Wednesday in Philadelphia ... Only one penalty was called in the game.
