Recap: Columbus vs. Colorado

Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Semyon Varlamov earned his career-high fifth shutout of the season with a glittering 44-save performance as the visiting Colorado Avalanche beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0 on Saturday.

Tyson Barrie collected three assists for the Avalanche, who scored three times before the game was 10 minutes old and rode Varlamov's play to their seventh win in 10 tries.

Curtis McElhinney gave up three goals on 12 shots in the first period. Sergei Bobrovsky was in net to start the second period and finished with 20 saves for Columbus, which had a seven-game losing streak end with Friday's win at New Jersey.

"I thought for most of the game we were outworking them, had a lot of shots on goal," said Columbus forward Ryan Johansen.

The Blue Jackets got into early penalty trouble, and fell behind 2-0 less than four minutes in.

Jarome Iginla worked a give-and-go with Barrie and beat McElhinney with a blast from the above the left circle during a 5-on-3 at 2:24. That goal gave him 1,211 career points, moving ahead of Bobby Clarke for 43rd in league history.

With Colorado still on a power play, Gabriel Landeskog took a pass from Ryan O'Reilly, spun in front of the net and swept the puck past McElhinney's right pad at 3:51.

"When you have an opportunity like that, you have to find a way to score some goals and that's exactly what are guys did," said Colorado coach Patrick Roy.

Matt Duchene picked off a pass by Scott Hartnell at the Colorado blueline and went five-hole against McElhinney on a breakaway to give the Avalanche a 3-0 lead 9:53 into the first period.

Alex Tanguay scored Colorado's fourth goal at 9:23 of the third period.
