Recap: NY Rangers vs. Ottawa

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Hammond made 26 saves for his third shutout in 23 games this season and the Ottawa Senators continued their push for a playoff spot with a 3-0 win over the New York Rangers on Thursday.

Hammond's shutout and goals by Clarke MacArthur, Kyle Turris and Jean-Gabriel Pageau gave the Senators their fifth win in six games (5-0-1) and moved them into seventh place in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of Pittsburgh and two ahead of Boston.

"It was nothing too fancy. From start to finish, maybe a little bit of an ugly brand of hockey," said Hammond. "But at this time of year it's not about how you win, it's just a matter that you do."

The Senators, trying to make the playoffs for the first time in three seasons, end the regular season in Philadelphia on Saturday.

The Rangers sat Rick Nash, Mats Zuccarello and Marc Staal with minor injuries after clinching the No. 1 seed in the East and their first Presidents' Trophy in 21 years with a 4-2 win over New Jersey on Tuesday,

They end the regular season on the road Saturday against Washington and remain within one point of tying the single-season franchise record of 112, set by the 1993-94 team that won the Stanley Cup.

Hammond made nine saves in the first period and Henrik Lundqvist had six for the Rangers.

Lundqvist was also shaken up in a collision inside the crease with Senators forward Mika Zibanejad, who landed on the goaltender's legs. Lundvist remained hunched over for several minutes and Rangers trainers looked at him, but he remained in the game.

"Anytime you see any of your players stay down you have concern," said Rangers coach Alain Vigneault, "but luckily he was all right."

The Senators beat him twice in a span of 1:04 in the second to take the lead.

MacArthur scored the first goal on a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle off Mark Stone's pass from behind the net.

Lundqvist got a piece of the puck but couldn't keep it out of the net at 18:35 after Turris deflected Eric Gryba's initial shot from the high right side.

Pageau added an empty-net goal after the Rangers pulled Lundqvist, who ended with 24 saves.

Game Notes

Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play ... The Senators got their only win in three games against the Rangers this season. The teams could meet in the first round of the playoffs next week.
