Recap: Colorado vs. Pittsburgh

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Semyon Varlamov stopped 28 shots to lead the Colorado Avalanche in a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.

Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and two assists while Jarome Iginla and Nathan MacKinnon lit the lamp for the Avalanche, who had lost two of three coming in.

Evgeni Malkin had the only goal of the game for the Penguins, who had a four- game winning streak broken. Marc-Andre Fleury allowed all three goals on 22 shots in the loss.

"They were intercepting a lot of our passes," said Pittsburgh forward Sidney Crosby. "Their defense played really well. When they scored we were not playing well, but we certainly had plenty of time to get back into this."

After a scoreless first period, the Avs needed just 13 seconds to get on the board in the second as Iginla took a pass in the neutral zone and flew down the right wing, blasting a shot past Fleury for his 20th of the year. The goal came on a power play that had carried over from the first period.

It was a 2-0 game with 5:31 to play in the middle frame, as Jan Hejda threw a hard pass to the front where it hit off the skate of MacKinnon and went in.

Pittsburgh made it a 2-1 contest halfway through the third as Malkin picked up a turnover in the neutral zone and skated through the middle. His first shot was blocked in front of the net, but he was able to bury his second chance for his 27th goal of the season.

The Avalanche, though, gave themselves some room with 5:03 to play as Ryan O'Reilly fired a pass through the neutral zone for Landeskog, who made a nifty move to get around the defender and buried his wrister for a 3-1 lead.

"It was a sort of 1-on-1 chance I had there," said Landeskog. "That was a big shift by us, because after they scored they got a lot of momentum. Outside of that one shift we played a solid game tonight from start to finish."

John Mitchell had a goal waived off that would have given Colorado a three- goal lead with 3:45 to play when Dennis Everberg ran into Fleury.

The Pens pulled Fleury with over two minutes to play, but were unable to cut into their deficit.
