Recap: Chicago vs. Colorado

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - A struggling Colorado power play surprisingly found success against the NHL's top penalty-killing unit.

Gabriel Landeskog and Tyson Barrie scored power-play goals 24 seconds apart in the third period as the Colorado Avalanche posted a 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Friday night at United Center.

Barrie finished with two goals and one assist for the Avalanche, who had been 1-for-38 on the man advantage in their previous 13 games. Landeskog scored in a personal-best fifth straight game, and Semyon Varlamov stopped 27 Chicago shots in his career-high 15th consecutive start.

Corey Crawford gave up four goals on 30 shots for Chicago, which fell to 2-1-3 on its eight-game homestand.

The Blackhawks were down two men after Patrick Sharp and Niklas Hjalmarsson were called for concurrent interference penalties at 10:44 of the third.

Landeskog positioned himself in front of Crawford and directed in a feed from Ryan O'Reilly during the 5-on-3 at 11:05, then Barrie scored on a one-timer from just inside the blue line at 11:29.

"Our power play has been well below average and that was big for us, confidence-wise, to get that early one and get another one," Barrie said.

The Blackhawks entered the game killing penalties at an 88.0 percent success rate.

"It was one of those games where it was tight, not a lot happening, and then all of a sudden a 5-on-3 blows the whole thing up," said Chicago coach Joel Quenneville.

Colorado went up 4-1 with 5:47 remaining when Crawford misplayed Brad Stuart's dump-in from center ice with his goalie stick.

"That's what they say: 'Putting the puck on net is never a bad play,'" said Stuart.

Barrie gave Colorado a 1-0 lead 12:52 into the game. He kept the puck in at the Chicago blue line on a clearing attempt, moved into the high slot and went top-shelf on Crawford.

Kris Versteeg tied it for the hosts at 9:05 of the second period. Brad Richards collected a carom off the end boards and chipped the puck out front to Versteeg, who sent a shot past a bewildered Varlamov.

Game Notes

Colorado has won its last four trips to Chicago ... Varlamov improved to 9-3-0 in 13 career games against the Blackhawks.
