Recap: Winnipeg vs. Edmonton

Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Blake Wheeler scored the winner in the shootout as the Winnipeg Jets took a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Monday.

Wheeler opened the shootout by slamming on the breaks and snapping a forehand past Viktor Fasth, who was injured on the play and had to be helped into the locker room.

Michael Hutchinson then stopped Nail Yakupov, Derek Roy and Jordan Eberle to give his team the victory.

Bryan Little had two goals and an assist while Andrew Ladd and Tyler Myers also scored for the Jets, who have won four of their last five. Hutchinson stopped 18 shots.

"I feel like I'm learning something new about the group every day," Myers said. "Tonight, we showed a lot of resilience."

Yakupov had two goals and Anton Lander and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also lit the lamp for the Oilers, who have lost three of four. Fasth made 42 saves.

The score was tied when Nugent-Hopkins scored on a breakaway at 1:08 of the third period to give the Oilers a 3-2 lead, but Winnipeg answered less than 2 1/2 minutes later on Myers' one-timer off a faceoff win.

Edmonton went back on top on the power play at 15:14, as Benoit Pouliot sent a hard saucer pass from the left boards to the right side of the net, where Yakupov slammed it home for his eighth of the year.

Winnipeg, though, scored just 42 seconds later when Ladd backhanded the disc in from down low for his 20th of the season.

A spirited overtime saw several scoring chances and seven shots, but neither side got the puck through.

"I thought that is a good hockey team over there," Oilers coach Todd Nelson said. "They are a heavy team, they play with a lot of pace."

The Jets scored at the 7:46 mark of the opening period on Little's first of the game, a power-play marker off a slap shot, but Edmonton scored the next two goals. Yakupov scored at 13:49 and Lander lit the lamp 1 1/2 minutes later on the power play.

Little's score at 8:16 of the second accounted for the only goal of the frame to sent it into the third tied.
