Recap: NY Islanders vs. Toronto

Uniondale, NY ( - Anders Lee scored a pair of goals as the New York Islanders extended the Toronto Maple Leafs' current woes with a 3-2 victory at Nassau Coliseum.

Casey Cizikas added a goal and Jaroslav Halak made 32 saves to help send the Leafs to a franchise-record 12th consecutive road loss. Toronto has now dropped 13 of its last 14 overall.

Jonathan Bernier came up with 38 saves in the Maple Leafs' latest setback, with Richard Panik posting a goal and assist and Trevor Smith also lighting the lamp.

Lee put the Islanders ahead just 1:11 in after stealing the puck from Cody Franson and beating Bernier on a breakaway, and his second of the night snapped a 2-2 deadlock with 7:58 left in the second period.

Bernier made a stop on Josh Bailey's redirect of a long drive from Travis Hamonic, but kicked the rebound right out for Lee to put it through the netminder's pads and put the Islanders back ahead.

"When you have the determination to get to the front of the net, you're going to score a lot of goals," Islanders head coach Jack Capuano said of Lee. "You go there and good things happen."

Halak protected the lead with a 14-save third period, with Toronto's best scoring chance coming when the All-Star goaltender fell down while vacating the crease to play the puck early in the frame. However, the Maple Leafs weren't able to get a clean shot off.

The Maple Leafs appeared disinterested during a poor opening period in which they were outshot by an 18-8 margin and fell behind 2-0 when a trailing Cizikas deposited the rebound of Colin McDonald's initial attempt with only 4:03 elapsed in the contest.

Toronto turned the tables in the second, registering the first nine shots of the stanza and scoring twice within the opening four-plus minutes.

A slap shot by Korbinian Holzer caromed straight to Panik for an easy tap-in to get the Leafs on the board 1:32 into the period. Smith tied it less than three minutes later by batting Panik's pass out of the air during a 3-on-1 rush.

"We got surprised a little bit by their push, but as soon as they scored the second goal, we settled down a little bit and started playing our hockey again," Halak said.
