Recap: Washington vs. Philadelphia

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Wayne Simmonds scored the winning goal early in the third period as the Philadelphia Flyers picked up a 3-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Sunday.

Mark Streit and Jakub Voracek also had goals for the Flyers, who have won five of their last six games.

"Definitely a solid 60 minutes. It was a real good defensive game," said Philadelphia head coach Craig Berube. "We played really well defensively, offensively we could do more, but I thought they were solid all-around moving the puck."

Steve Mason started the game in net and made eight saves, but left with 8:42 to play in the second with a lower-body injury. Ray Emery stopped five shots in relief.

Philadelphia general manager Ron Hextall said after the game that Mason would be evaluated on Monday to determine the extent of the injury, but he will not travel with the team for Tuesday's game in Montreal.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 33rd goal of the season for the Capitals, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Braden Holtby allowed two goals on 24 shots in the loss.

"I think the Flyers had a little bit more of a jump, today, they looked fresher than us," said Washington head coach Barry Trotz. "They hadn't played in five days. Three in four; seven in 11 for us - not an excuse."

The score was tied in the third, but Simmonds gave his team a 2-1 lead 3:50 in as he flew down the left wing and snapped a wrister past Holtby for his 19th of the season.

Washington had a power play awarded at 7:20, its sixth of the game, when Andrew MacDonald was whistled for tripping, but was unable to break through.

Tom Wilson, though, took a roughing penalty late in the game, and Voracek was able to score into the empty net in the final minute to seal the win.

The first period of the game passed without a score, but the Flyers scored 50 seconds into the second as Streit's one-timer from the right point went in through a screen.

Skating on the power play and with Emery in net, the Caps were able to tie the game as Ovechkin took a pass at the left circle and lasered a shot into the net.

Game Notes

Ovechkin is tied with the Rangers' Rick Nash for the league-lead in goals ... Washington hits the road for the next four games starting Wednesday in San Jose.
