Recap: Calgary vs. Arizona

Calgary, AB ( - Paul Byron tallied twice and Sven Baertschi added two assists as Calgary dropped Arizona by a 5-3 count at the Saddledome on Thursday.

Mark Giordano, David Jones and Sean Monahan provided supplemental offense for the Flames, winners in five of their last seven outings. Jonas Hiller improved to 8-4-1 thanks to a 20-save effort.

"We never want to lose two games in a row," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley. "We want to show resiliency. We want to show character. And once again tonight our guys did that."

Shane Doan and Antoine Vermette registered a goal and helper each for the Coyotes, losers of three straight and six of nine.

Joe Vitale also scored, but Mike Smith was beaten five times on just 25 shots in the setback.

"Calgary made plays to get to the front of the net on our turnovers," said Arizona head coach Dave Tippett. "When we don't have the puck enough to make those plays it's hard to get in front of their net."

Giordano gave the Flames the lead for good on his marker with 3:37 remaining in the second period. In a 4-on-4 situation, he was allowed to stand atop the right circle and waited for T.J. Brodie's pass before whipping it past Smith for a 4-3 contest.

Jones effectively iced the game with just over 7 1/2 minutes to play when his desperation centering feed from the right-wing boards caromed off a Coyotes player in front and veered into the net.

The visitors' comeback effort was hampered by Martin Hanzal's tripping call just over two minutes later, and the Arizona offense fell silent with Smith on the bench for an extra attacker in the final 80 seconds.

Byron put the hosts on the board with 8:54 left in the first, but Doan evened the score at 16:43.

Byron again gave the Flames a one-goal edge just over two minutes into the second and Monahan extended the lead to 3-1 roughly 4 1/2 minutes later when he managed to poke a loose puck through a mass of bodies in the crease.

Vermette's power-play marker near the midway point of regulation pulled the Coyotes within one, then Vitale forged a 3-3 deadlock with a sharp-angle shot from the right side which eluded Hiller at the near post.

Game Notes

Giordano extended his point streak to eight games, during which he has totaled 13 points (5G, 8A) ... The Flames didn't win their 10th game last year until a Dec. 4 win over Phoenix, and reached double digits in victories the quickest since winning 10 in 16 games to open up the 2009-10 season.
