Recap: Carolina vs. Winnipeg

Raleigh, NC ( - Blake Wheeler's two goals and 22 saves from Michael Hutchinson enabled the Winnipeg Jets to halt the Carolina Hurricanes' recent surge with a 3-1 victory at PNC Arena.

Michael Frolik tacked on an empty-net goal, while Mark Scheifele and Mark Stuart each recorded two assists as the Jets dealt Carolina its first regulation loss in November. The Hurricanes began the month on a 5-0-1 tear after going winless in October.

Elias Lindholm had the lone goal for Carolina on a second-period power play. Cam Ward stopped 34-of-36 shots in defeat.

Wheeler's second tally of the night, a successful deflection of Zach Bogosian's wrist shot from the point, snapped a 1-1 tie with 6:58 remaining in the second period, and the Jets held off a late charge from Carolina in the third to stay on top.

Winnipeg successfully killed off a penalty to Stuart midway through the final stanza, then survived a tip-in chance from Lindholm that landed just wide of the net with just over 3 1/2 minutes left.

The Hurricanes pressured the Winnipeg zone with Ward pulled down the stretch, but the Jets regained control of the puck and Frolik sealed the win by firing the puck into the vacated net with 1:30 to go.

Wheeler also scored on a redirection, this one a long drive from Stuart from near the blue line, 5:29 into the contest to get the Jets -- coming off a shutout loss in Montreal on Tuesday -- off to a fast start.

"We really liked our first period," Jets head coach Paul Maurice said. "We got a little bit of a payoff, coming in from a loss from Montreal and establishing a real good level of play."

The Hurricanes, on the other hand, began the game slowly, mustering only one shot through the first 12 minutes of play and six for the opening period.

"I didn't like our start again," Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters remarked. "Usually we have more energy than we had tonight. For whatever (reason), we didn't have a lot of energy, and it never really got going."

Carolina did draw even early in the second, however, capitalizing on a hooking penalty to Bogosian when Lindholm took a give from Nathan Gerbe and fired a close-range shot that caromed off Stuart's skate and past Hutchinson at 3:44.
