Recap: Carolina vs. Washington

Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Fehr scored a tiebreaking goal with 4:02 remaining in the third period to lift the visiting Washington Capitals to a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday.

Jay Beagle had a goal in the first period and Braden Holtby made 29 saves for the Capitals, who snapped a two-game losing streak with a fifth straight win at PNC Arena.

"Sometimes you gotta grind it out and tonight we did. That's a credit to the guys. Good response by them," said Washington head coach Barry Trotz.

Alexander Semin scored his first goal of the season for Carolina, which has dropped five of its last seven games. Anton Khudobin stopped 26 shots in defeat.

Semin whipped a backhander from the slot that went in off the crossbar, tying the game 3:19 into the third. The tally was the 500th career point for the former Washington first-round pick.

The Capitals retook the lead after Carolina forward Riley Nash mishandled the puck in the defensive zone. Fehr pounced on the loose puck, shook off a slash and beat Khudobin on the glove side.

"We need better puck management late in the game," said Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters.

Carolina couldn't produce an equalizer despite extended time in Washington's end with Khudobin on the bench.

Washington capitalized on a Carolina turnover to open the scoring. Defenseman Michal Jordan lost the puck at his own blue line, leading to a rush by Jason Chimera. Khudobin stopped a shot by Chimera, but Beagle poked the rebound into an open net at 2:19 of the first.
