Recap: St. Louis vs. Carolina

St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Steen picked up the game-winning goal early in the third period, as St. Louis took down Carolina, 4-2, at Scottrade Center.

Roman Polak, David Backes and T.J. Oshie also lit the lamp for the Blues, who have taken eight of their last 10 games.

Brian Elliott needed to make only 18 saves to earn his third win of the season.

Eric Staal and Nathan Gerbe netted second-period short-handed goals for the Hurricanes, who lost for just the second time in the last six games.

Justin Peters stopped 28 shots in the setback.

Steen put the hosts back on top with 6:20 elapsed in the third period. St. Louis caught the Hurricanes in a line change, with Polak's long lead pass from his own zone finding Steen along the right wing, and the NHL leader in goals was true from the circle for a 3-2 contest.

"It was a tight-checking game," Staal said. "We got caught on a bad change."

Jay Harrison was sent off for elbowing inside of two minutes left, and despite the manpower disadvantage, Peters was pulled. Oshie netted the insurance tally into an empty net with 44 seconds remaining.

"I thought we came out with good jump in the third period," Steen said. "We had two solid shifts to get it going."

Polak snapped the scoreless deadlock just before the midway point of regulation on a shot from the right circle, and the hosts led 2-0 on a Backes shot from a sharp angle on the right side just over two minutes later.

Carolina managed to equalize prior to the end of the period, with a pair of short-handed goals 57 seconds apart.

Down a man due to a bench minor, Staal halved the visitors' deficit at 15:37 on a breakaway backhander. On the next shift, Riley Nash chased down Elliott's errant clear and fed into the slot for Gerbe's successful chance at 16:34.
