New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Toronto Maple Leafs forward Carter Ashton was suspended two games without pay for boarding Calgary Flames defenseman Derek Smith, the NHL announced Friday.

Ashton received a boarding penalty for shoving Smith into the boards from several feet away in the second period of Toronto's 4-2 win at Calgary on Wednesday night.

The hit caused a "dangerous and violent collision with the boards," NHL senior VP of player safety Brendan Shanahan said.

"This is an extremely dangerous distance from the boards for such a forceful and preventable hit and the results could have been much worse," Shanahan said.

Smith was not injured on the play and Ashton had no history of suspensions or fines in 24 previous NHL games.

Ashton, 22, was a first-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in 2009. He played 15 games for the Maple Leafs in 2011-12 and has one assist in 10 games this season.

He will forfeit $8,615.38 for the suspension with the money going to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
