Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Paul Ranger left Wednesday's 5-3 loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning after taking a hard hit late in the first period.

Ranger was rammed head-first into the end boards by Bolts forward Alex Killorn with three seconds remaining in the opening frame. He did not move while face- down on the ice, and was loaded onto an immobilizing device before taken out of the arena on a stretcher.

Killorn was given a major for boarding and a game misconduct, and may be facing supplemental discipline from the NHL for his effort.

The Leafs said Ranger was taken to a local hospital for precautionary assessment, and that he was stable, conscious and alert.
