Blues hire Muller as assistant coach

St. Louis, MO ( - The St. Louis Blues named former Carolina Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller assistant coach on Tuesday.

Muller, 48, spent parts of the past three seasons as head coach of the Hurricanes, posting an 80-80-27 overall record. He was fired by the Hurricanes last week.

"We are excited to add Kirk to our staff," said Blues president and GM Doug Armstrong. "He was a Stanley Cup-winning player, and as a coach, has shown excellent communication skills and the ability to relate to both young and veteran players."

During his playing career, the Kingston, Ontario native spent 19 seasons (1984-2003) in the NHL, appearing in 1,349 regular season games. A six-time All-Star and five-time 30-goal scorer, Muller finished his NHL career with 357 goals and 602 assists.

Muller also dressed in 127 career postseason games, posting 33 goals and 36 assists, scoring the Stanley Cup-clinching goal for Montreal in 1993.
