Pittsburgh, PA ( - Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will not need surgery on his injured wrist and will instead continue treatment to heal the problem.

The exact nature of the injury was not disclosed by the Penguins, who said last week that Crosby was dealing with a wrist issue and added that further evaluations would be made before determining if surgery was necessary.

"After seeking additional medical advice, doctors have decided not to perform surgery on Sidney Crosby's wrist," Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said in a Tuesday statement. "Sid will continue treatments and be evaluated regularly while he prepares for training camp in September."

Crosby led the NHL in scoring with 104 points in 80 games last season and was named the Hart Trophy winner as league MVP for the second time.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette cited a source last week as saying the wrist injury hindered Crosby's play during the playoffs and that a minor arthroscopic procedure was likely.

Crosby had just one goal and eight assists in 13 Stanley Cup playoff games this past spring. He failed to register a point in the final three games of the Eastern Conference semifinals when the Penguins blew a 3-1 series lead and lost to the New York Rangers in seven games.
