New York, NY ( - Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf, Los Angeles' Dustin Brown and Chicago's Jonathan Toews have been selected as the 2014 finalists for the Mark Messier Leadership Award.

The award recognizes an individual as a superior leader in hockey and as a contributing member of society. It honors an individual who leads by positive example through on-ice performance, motivation of team members and a dedication to community activities and charitable causes.

Getzlaf enjoyed a banner year in 2013-14, scoring a career-high 31 goals and ranking second in the NHL with 87 points to lead the Ducks to their best season in franchise history. Anaheim's captain since 2010-11, he also has taken leadership role off the ice, highlighted by the annual Getzlaf Golf Shootout, which raised more than $300,000 for CureDuchenne, a nonprofit that raises awareness and funds research for those suffering from the progressive muscle-wasting disease, which impacts one in every 3,500 boys.

Brown has spent his entire 10-year NHL career with the Kings, serving as their captain for the past six seasons. Known for his physical style of play, he donates $50 per hit to a different charity each campaign. During the past two seasons, Brown selected Children's Hospital Los Angeles' Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit. Prior to that, he and his wife partnered with the nonprofit KaBOOM! to raise $70,000 and build a new playground in Carson, Calif., that now hosts more than 100 kids per day.

Toews became the fourth-youngest captain in NHL history when he was given the title for the Blackhawks in 2008 at the age of 20. He helps grant wishes for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, including a special skating session with 4-year- old Nicholas Skretkowski prior to the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series at Soldier Field.

Brown has been a finalist each of the last two years, while Toews was last year's runner-up to Daniel Alfredsson. Getzlaf is a finalist for the first time.

Messier compiles the list of finalists from suggestions obtained through club and league personnel, as well as fans, then chooses the winner.

This year's winner will be announced June 24 during the league's awards program in Las Vegas.
