Raleigh, NC ( - Defenseman Tim Gleason will return to the Carolina Hurricanes, agreeing to a one-year contract worth $1.2 million for the 2014-15 season.

Gleason spent more than seven seasons in Carolina before he was shipped to Toronto last January in exchange for defensemen John-Michael Liles and Dennis Robertson.

In 56 games for the Hurricanes and Maple Leafs last season, Gleason notched one goal and five assists for six points.

"We obviously know well what Tim brings to our team on and off the ice and how he fits in our organization," said Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis in a statement Thursday. "We are happy that he is choosing to return to Raleigh."

The 31-year-old Michigan native has 16 goals and 117 assists for 133 points in 633 NHL games over 10 seasons for Los Angeles, Carolina and Toronto. He ranks third among defensemen in games played for the Hurricanes with 491 since the franchise relocated from Hartford.

Gleason was selected with the 23rd overall pick of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by Ottawa.
