Ashburn, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Redskins officially introduced Jay Gruden as their newest head coach on Thursday.

Gruden replaces Mike Shanahan, who was fired a day after the Redskins completed a disastrous 3-13 season with eight straight losses.

"I look forward to the challenge," said Gruden, who doesn't have any NFL head coaching experience.

"I don't know what happened last year and I don't care what happened last year," Gruden added regarding the reported dysfunction within the Redskins' football ranks. "I am only concerned about the future."

Washington was 24-40 under Shanahan with a surprise NFC East title in 2012.

"We were looking for a leader, someone who could lead this team," said Redskins general manager Bruce Allen. "Fortunately for us the Chargers beat the Bengals and we were able to bring Jay in."

Gruden has been the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals the past three seasons. The Bengals reached the playoffs each of those three years and were eliminated last Sunday by San Diego after winning the AFC North title.

Before joining Cincinnati in 2011, Gruden spent seven seasons as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under his brother Jon from 2002-08. He then moved on to the Florida Tuskers of the fledgling United Football League, first as offensive coordinator and then as head coach in 2010.

In addition, Gruden was a head coach in the Arena Football League. He was 93-61 with a pair of ArenaBowl titles with the Orlando Predators.
