(SportsNetwork.com) - Rex Ryan knew he'd be back for the 2014 season and now it appears he might be the New York Jets coach for a lot longer.

ESPN has reported that Ryan has agreed to a multi-year extension. He was set to enter the final year of his contract in 2014 and there was belief that any extension might be only for an extra year.

After months of speculation surrounding Ryan's job security, Jets owner Woody Johnson confirmed the coach's return for 2014 just moments after New York concluded the 2013 campaign with a 20-7 win at Miami to finish 8-8.

The Jets are 42-38 in Ryan's five-year tenure. He guided the club to the AFC Championship Game in each of his first two years, and still has just one losing season on his resume -- 6-10 in 2012.

When general manager Mike Tannenbaum was fired after the 2012 campaign, John Idzik took over the position and Ryan's job status became a constant issue throughout 2013.

The Jets' uneven season began with an NFL record of alternating wins and losses over the first 10 games. After a 23-3 loss at home against the Dolphins left the Jets 5-7 to start December, the team rallied and won three of its last four.
