Green Bay, WI ( - The Green Bay Packers have announced that outside linebackers coach and Hall-of-Fame candidate Kevin Greene has decided to step away from coaching.

"I am stepping away from the NFL at this time in order to spend more time with my wife, Tara, and our children, Gavin and Gabrielle," said Greene. "I will miss coaching and will try to return after our kids move on to college if a team will have me."

Greene, 51, spent five seasons on head coach Mike McCarthy's staff, mentoring one of the toughest linebacker corps in the league. The Packers rank fourth in the NFL since 2009 with 204 sacks, 91 1/2 of which were recorded by linebackers. Under Greene, Clay Matthews became the first player in Packers franchise history to reach the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons.

"My experience here with the Green Bay Packers has been nothing but positive," Greene continued. "I have a peace about the productivity that I helped bring forward in all of the fine young men that have been entrusted to me these past five years. I am most proud of all their accomplishments and the fine young men they've become in this league."

As a player, Greene ranks third on the NFL's all-time sack list with 160.0, trailing just Bruce Smith (200.0) and Reggie White (198.0). No linebacker has more sacks than Greene, a member of the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team.
