Ft. Myers, FL ( - Filling a hole in the rotation created when Ryan Dempster decided not to pitch in 2014, the Boston Red Sox announced Saturday the signing of starter Chris Capuano to a one-year deal.

Capuano spent a subpar 2013 season with the Dodgers, going just 4-7 with a 4.26 earned run average over 105 2/3 innings in 24 games (20 starts).

However, the 35-year-old did earn a victory with three innings of scoreless relief to give LA a win in Game 3 of the NLDS against Atlanta.

Originally an eighth-round pick of Arizona in the 1999 draft, the native of western Massachusetts made his MLB debut in 2003 for that same franchise. He has compiled a 73-83 mark and 4.27 ERA in 238 appearances -- 209 starts -- for the D-Backs, Brewers, Mets and Dodgers.

Capuano is still trying to regain form shown during his 18-win campaign in 2005. Tommy John surgery kept him away from baseball for the entire 2008-09 seasons, and he managed back-to-back double-digit winning years in 2011-12.
