Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Marlon Byrd is returning to the franchise with which he began his major league career.

The veteran outfielder reached an agreement with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday on a two-year contract worth $16 million.

The Phillies selected Byrd in the 10th round of the 1999 amateur draft.

Byrd, now 36, had one of the better seasons of his career in 2013.

He batted .285 with 21 homers and 71 in 117 games with the New York Mets before being dealt to Pittsburgh and helping the Pirates reach the playoffs. He hit .318 over 30 games down the stretch and went 8-for-22 in his first postseason action.

"Marlon adds a significant upgrade both offensively and defensively to our outfield," said Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. "With his talent and clubhouse presence, we believe Marlon will be a solid addition to our club as we address our needs and plan to contend in 2014 and beyond."

Byrd, an All-Star in 2010, appeared in 256 games with the Phillies from 2002-05.
