Recap: Seattle vs. LA Angels

Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Saunders drove in two runs as Seattle downed the LA Angels of Anaheim, 4-1, to end the season in a bittersweet victory.

The Mariners (87-75) came into the game needing a win and an Oakland loss to force a one-game playoff for the final wild card spot in the American League. Oakland, though, defeated Texas while Seattle was playing to lock up the final playoff spot up for grabs in the majors.

"It just wasn't in the cards for us. It was a tremendous learning experience for this club," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said.

Mike Zunino also drove in a pair of runs for the Mariners, who finished the season with four straight wins. Felix Hernandez (15-6) allowed just one hit with striking out seven over 5 1/3 innings.

"He's as tough as they come and he's really pitched tough against us this year," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Hernandez.

The Angels (98-64) won the AL West and finished with the best record in the majors. They will play the winner of the Oakland/Kansas City wild card game in the division series starting on Friday.

Colby Rasmus (3-2) was limited to just three-plus innings in the start, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk for the Angels, who lost five of their final seven games.

Logan Morrison singled with one out in the second and scored on a Saunders double to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Kendrys Morales walked and Morrison later singled before Saunders hit his second double of the game to bring home Morales. Zunino then singled home two more for a 4-0 advantage.

The Angels got on the board in the ninth on an RBI double from John McDonald to cap the scoring in the game.
