Recap: Chicago WSox vs. Oakland

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Avisail Garcia's two-out, two-run single pushed the Chicago White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics in the third edition of a four-game series.

Adam Eaton collected two hits and scored once for the White Sox, who shook off an 11-2 drubbing on Tuesday and has taken two of three in the set.

"We want to show that we're not dead," said Eaton. "The White Sox are here to stay. We're going to be better next year, and we're going to continue to push to be better. It starts with this month, finish on a good note."

Zach Putnam (5-3) tossed a scoreless top of the eighth to snag the win. Jake Petricka added a perfect ninth to post his 12th save.

Adam Dunn drove in the lone run for the Athletics, losers in 10 of their last 13. Luke Gregerson (4-4) suffered the loss and a blown save, charged with a pair of unearned runs in the deciding frame despite striking out three.

"I haven't been here very long, but there's no quit in this team," Dunn said. "Obviously we're disappointed, but you just hope to get hot at the right time."

Oakland trails the Angels by nine games after Los Angeles won, 8-1, in Texas, but still holds the first AL wild-card spot.

Jeff Samardzija held the ChiSox to six hits and two walks while striking out six in the first seven innings, but it all fell apart for Gregerson and the A's in the eighth.

Carlos Sanchez singled and when Eaton grounded to first, Nate Freiman's throwing error in an attempt to start a double play allowed both to remain safe. They eventually moved up on a wild pitch with one out, then, after Jose Abreu struck out swinging, Conor Gillaspie was walked intentionally.

Garcia then punched a single up the middle to score Eaton and pinch-runner Leury Garcia and give Chicago a one-run advantage.

It looked like an old mate was going to provide the winning difference for the other side.

Dunn -- who played for the Sox from 2011 through Aug. 31 -- came through with a two-out base hit in the fourth inning to score Coco Crisp. Crisp began the inning with a single, went to second on a Sam Fuld walk, then to third as Josh Donaldson hit into a double play.

That was the only significant blemish on Chris Bassitt's ledger, as he tossed six-plus innings of five-hit ball for the hosts while striking out five.

Game Notes

Oakland hasn't won consecutive games since Aug. 22-23 ... The clubs combined to go 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left a total of 12 men on base.
