Recap: San Diego vs. Arizona

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Cory Spangenberg hit a two-run single in his major-league debut and the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 on Monday in the opener of a four-game series.

Spangenberg, selected Monday from Double-A San Antonio as part of San Diego's September callups, made a diving stop with runners at first and second base in the first inning to potentially save a run.

"I thought he had some good swings," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He didn't look overwhelmed, he looked calm. I think the guys helped him relax a little bit. A good first day in the big leagues."

Alexi Amarista also drove in a run for the Padres, who were coming off a 7-1 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday after winning their previous three games with walk-off hits in extra innings.

Tyson Ross (13-12) threw six innings and gave up one run in his 14th straight quality start, extending his Padres record. The right-hander struck out eight, walked two and surrendered six hits.

Kevin Quackenbush fanned all three batters he faced in the ninth inning to earn his second save.

Two of those batters, Arizona third baseman Jake Lamb and left fielder Nolan Reimold, each struck out four times in the game.

Trevor Cahill (3-10) took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits and six walks in four-plus innings. It was Arizona's 11th loss in 15 games.

"It's been frustrating since I feel like I've been making strides towards limiting the walks and pounding the zone, and then just a day like this where it all kind of crumbles down," said Cahill. "Now you're back to square one."

Will Venable hit a leadoff single in the fourth inning and scored later on Amarista's two-out hit to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

Cahill was pulled with no outs in the fifth after giving up a single to Yasmani Grandal and a double to Jedd Gyorko. Eury De La Rosa surrendered Spangenberg's first MLB hit, a single through the right side to make it 3-0.

Ross gave up three consecutive singles to start his last inning, the sixth. Miguel Montero hit the third one, driving in David Peralta to draw Arizona within 3-1.

But Padres relievers Nick Vincent and Dale Thayer bridged the gap between Ross and Quackenbush with one perfect inning apiece.
