Recap: Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Yovani Gallardo pitched seven innings of one-run ball as the Milwaukee Brewers opened a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs with a 3-1 victory on Monday.

Gallardo (7-6) scattered six hits, struck out six and did not issue a walk in pitching the NL Central-leading Brewers to its fourth win in five games.

"I made pitches whenever I needed to," said Gallardo. "I just gotta keep it (close) and let the guys come back and swing the bat."

Scooter Gennett went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Mark Reynolds added a solo homer for the victors.

Jake Arrieta (6-4) pitched into the eighth inning but was saddled with the loss having allowed two runs on five hits.

The best defensive play of the game came from someone wearing a Cubs uniform, but it was from a fan sitting in the left-field bleachers after Reynolds crushed a first-pitch fastball nearly out of the stadium in the second frame.

The ball would have landed on Waveland Avenue had it not been for a elderly man standing on the top row and snagging the solo blast out of the air.

Chicago tied it in the fifth when Chris Coghlan's screamer ate up Reynolds at first base. Justin Ruggiano scored from second on what was ruled a double.

Ryan Braun was thrown out at home in the seventh on a double from Gennett, but Gennett scored the go-ahead run on Khris Davis' line drive into the left-field corner.

"In the seventh, a couple pitches that really didn't have the bite stayed in the zone with not a lot of movement, and they put some good swings on it," said Arrieta. "They have a really deep lineup, and it shows by what they're doing and how they're playing as a team thus far this year."

Gennett added an insurance run in the ninth with a base hit to center, as Aramis Ramirez lumbered around to score thanks to Arismendy Alcantara's off- target throw.

Francisco Rodriguez worked around a one-single in the ninth en route to his league-leading 36th save.

Game Notes

Reynolds has recorded at least 20 home runs seven consecutive years ... Rodriguez is one save away from tying Rollie Fingers (341) on MLB's all-time saves list ... Arrieta lost for the first time in eight home starts this year ... Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
