Recap: LA Angels vs. Toronto

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Iannetta went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-2, in the opener of a three-game set.

Angels starter Jered Weaver departed after two perfect innings due to lower back tightness. Matt Shoemaker (7-2) got the win, replacing Weaver and allowing two runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings for the Angels, who have won five straight and seven of their last eight games.

"I felt something on a comeback by (Adam) Lind. When I went into the dugout it started to tighten up," Weaver said. "We did some treatment on it and it definitely feels better right now. I think I should be ready for my next start."

Joe Smith tossed a scoreless ninth to notch his 11th save of the year.

J.A. Happ (7-5) surrendered five runs on seven hits and three walks over 4 1/3 frames for Toronto, which has dropped five straight. Juan Francisco smacked a solo homer in defeat.

The Blue Jays broke a 1-1 deadlock in the fifth when Francisco smacked a two- out solo shot to right-center, but the Angels countered with four runs in the home half to surge ahead.

Iannetta began the home fifth by launching one towards the big wall in right- center that was ruled a ground-rule double due to fan interference. Kole Calhoun and Mike Trout then worked walks to load the bases for Albert Pujols, who blooped a single into right to plate Iannetta and tie the score.

Josh Hamilton's sacrifice fly to center brought home Calhoun and Howie Kendrick's base hit up the middle pushed across Trout. Pujols scored on Erick Aybar's double to give the Angels a 5-2 advantage.

"We finally took the lead in the fifth, but after that they scored four and shut us down," Toronto manager John Gibbons said.

Earlier, the Angels opened the scoring with a run in the third before Toronto tied the score with a run in the fourth.

Iannetta hit a one-out single and Calhoun doubled to put runners on second and third before Trout's groundout plated Iannetta.

The Blue Jays began the fourth with consecutive singles by Munenori Kawasaki and Melky Cabrera to put runners on the corners for Jose Bautista, whose sacrifice fly brought home Kawasaki.
