Recap: Boston vs. Chicago WSox

Boston, MA ( - Dayan Viciedo hit a three-run homer to back 6 2/3 strong innings from Scott Carroll, and the White Sox took down the Red Sox, 4-0, in Monday's opener of a four-game series at Fenway Park.

Carroll (3-5) fanned five, walked two and allowed just one hit. Javy Guerra gave up one hit in his 1 1/3 relief frames and Zach Putnam pitched the ninth for Chicago, which has won four of its last five games.

"This one felt good and I was aggressive in the strike zone," Carroll said. "It felt good to put up runs early too. It was pretty cool to have that support."

Adam Dunn homered and scored twice for the visitors.

A.J. Pierzynski and Jackie Bradley, Jr. collected the lone hits for Boston, which was blanked for the third time in the last 10 games and has dropped seven of 10 overall.

Clay Buchholz (3-5) struck out seven over seven innings, but took the loss after surrendering five hits and four runs.

"It's the best I've felt this season probably," Buchholz said. "I can't get away from mistakes getting hit. When it's not going right, it's not going right."

Dunn went deep to right to begin the second, giving Carroll all the offense he needed.

In the fourth, Dunn kept the inning alive with a two-out double, Alexei Ramirez followed with a walk, and Viciedo buried a three-run shot to center which gave the White Sox a 4-0 edge.

Carroll allowed Pierzynski's leadoff hit in the third, walked Bradley in the sixth and walked Mike Napoli in the seventh. Only Bradley managed to reach second -- stealing the bag in the sixth as Xander Bogaerts fanned -- but was stranded there after Brock Holt and Daniel Nava grounded out.

Guerra came on after the walk to Napoli, and ended the frame by inducing a Stephen Drew fly out.

Bradley singled with one away in the eighth, moved to second on a Bogaerts grounder but remained there as Holt grounded out.

Putman walked David Ortiz with two away in the ninth, but Napoli grounded into a game-ending fielder's choice from short to second.
