Recap: San Diego vs. Arizona

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Peralta's two-run single in the fourth inning proved to be enough as the Arizona Diamondbacks edged the San Diego Padres, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game NL West series.

Brandon McCarthy (2-10) snapped a five-decision losing streak with seven solid innings of one-run ball. He struck out seven and only gave up six hits.

"His breaking ball was a little bit better today than I can remember," Padres manager Bud Black said of McCarthy.

The Padres, who were no-hit by San Francisco's Tim Lincecum their last time out, did not record any extra-base hits or work any walks.

The only run they mustered came on Tyson Ross' sacrifice fly in the fifth, the first run the club has managed with Ross on the mound in his past five starts.

Ross (6-8) wound up going seven innings, allowing only five hits and two runs.

The runs came in the fourth when a walk, single and wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs. After Aaron Hill struck out, Peralta singled back through the middle to plate both Paul Goldschmidt and Miguel Montero.

The Padres threatened in the fifth with runners on second and third, and Ross helped his own cause with a deep, run-scoring fly ball to center.

McCarthy limited the damage by striking out Everth Cabrera and retiring Seth Smith on a flyout, then benefited from a rare double play in the sixth.

Chase Headley led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Peralta misplayed it in left field. Yasmani Grandal advanced the runner with a groundout, and Will Venable followed with a ground ball to the right side that Aaron Hill fielded and threw home to nab Headley in a rundown.

"That was a huge play," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.

After Headley was tagged out, Venable was caught in a rundown himself as the Diamondbacks completed the 4-2-5-6-4 double play.

Brad Ziegler tossed a 1-2-3 eighth, and Addison Reed did the same in the ninth to post his 19th save.
