Recap: San Francisco vs. Cincinnati

San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Leake struck out a career-high 12 as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the San Francisco Giants, 3-1, in the opener of a four-game set at AT&T Park.

Leake (6-6), who never had a double-digit strikeout game in his career entering Thursday, allowed one run on four hits and a walk over eight innings of work.

"You know what as a young guy we've seen him evolve," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "His stuff has gotten better. He's pitching with the best velocity of his career."

Brandon Phillips, who missed the past three games with a bruised heel, delivered a homer, while Zack Cosart and Ryan Ludwick each knocked in a run for the Reds, who have won five of their last six.

Ryan Vogelsong (5-4) took the loss after giving up one run on five hits with seven punchouts over six innings. Vogelsong was on the hook in the seventh when reliever Jean Machi was tagged for two runs in the inning.

"We have to get some other guys going," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "We're a little cold right now."

The game was scoreless until the fifth when Jay Bruce singled with one out and Cosart doubled him home to batters later to give the Reds a 1-0 lead.

Phillips led off the seventh with his sixth homer of the season, then Bruce doubled before Ludwick singled to center to increase the cushion to 3-0.

In his first big league game, Adam Duvall slammed an 0-2 slider into the seats in left for his first Major League hit to cut into the deficit, but that's all the Giants could muster against Leake.

Aroldis Chapman came on in the ninth to close it out for Cincinnati and immediately was greeted with a leadoff double off the bat of Buster Posey.

Chapman worked around the leadoff man, however, inducing a groundout from Pablo Sandoval, then striking out Michael Morse before getting Duvall to line out to third for his 15th save of the season.

Game Notes

San Fran has lost six of seven at home ... The Reds went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, while the Giants finished 0-for-5 in those instances ... Posey had two of San Francisco's five hits.
