Recap: San Francisco vs. San Diego

San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Odrisamer Despaigne spun seven shutout innings in his MLB debut and the San Diego Padres blanked the San Francisco Giants, 6-0, in the opener of a three-game set.

Despaigne (1-0), who retired the first 10 batters he faced, scattered four hits, while Yasmani Grandal added a controversial ground-rule RBI double and a run scored for the Padres, who snapped a brief two-game slide.

Matt Cain (1-6) struck out seven, but surrendered six runs on seven hits and a walk over 7 1/3 frames for San Francisco, which has dropped seven of its last nine games.

"The one (pitch) to Grandal was really bad," Cain said. "I wasn't able to finish out the eighth to keep it at 3-0."

The Padres plated three runs in the fourth and added three more in the eighth for their 6-0 win.

Back-to-back one-out singles by Everth Cabrera and Seth Smith in the fourth preceded Carlos Quentin's lineout. Grandal then launched a towering shot to right-center. The umpires originally ruled Grandal's hit a homer, but it was overturned to a ground-rule double following a review when replays showed that a fan reached over and caught the ball with his hat.

Padres manager Bud Black was immediately ejected after coming out of the dugout to argue the call. A run was still rewarded on the play, but Smith was sent back to third.

"I was in disbelief when they placed him (Smith) at third base," Black said.

San Diego, though, still got the two runs anyway as Tommy Medica came up next laced a double down the left-field line that just sailed past the outstretched glove of a leaping Pablo Sandoval at third.

Jake Goebbert and Will Venable tallied consecutive one-out base hits to put runners on the corners in the eighth. Cabrera then grounded a single through the hole on the right side to bring home Goebbert, and Venable scored when Hunter Pence's throw was deflected into the dugout by second baseman Joe Panik.

Javier Lopez replaced Cain on the mound and Smith whacked a double down the right-field line to plate Cabrera for San Diego's six-run spread.

Game Notes

The Padres were 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position, while San Francisco finished 0-for-4 with RISP ... Cain's ERA ballooned to 4.82 on the season.
