Recap: Arizona vs. Houston

Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Dexter Fowler and Jose Altuve each went 3- for-5 and combined to score three runs to help the Houston Astros to a 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday in the opener of a brief two-game series.

Jarred Cosart (5-5) picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings with eight strikeouts.

"(Cosart) used his changeup tonight and it was the difference maker," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "In his ability to go the six innings, it was because he was able to use his off-speed pitches and I thought he did a tremendous job."

Josh Collmenter (4-3) took the loss after giving up four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits over seven innings of work.

Miguel Montero and Paul Goldschmidt each knocked in a run for the D-backs, who had won five of six coming in.

Houston, which has won four of five, scored two runs in the first and second innings. Fowler and Altuve singled to open the game before Jon Singleton grounded into a force out to put runners at the corners.

Jason Castro was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Matt Dominguez lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Fowler to give the Astros a 1-0 advantage. Robbie Grossman reached on a force attempt error by second baseman Aaron Hill on what would have ended the inning.

Hill moved up the middle on the play and bobbled the grounder as the runners advanced and Singleton crossed home to push the margin to 2-0.

Fowler singled with one out in the second and scored on Altuve's double to center. Castro made it 4-0 with a two-out double that plated Altuve.

"I wasn't very good the first two innings," said Collmenter. "(The pitches) were a little up in the zone. Really about the third inning I started to settle in."

Arizona got on the board with one-out double from Goldschmidt. Gerardo Parra walked to represent the Diamondbacks' first baserunner before Goldschmidt chopped a double down the third-base line to help cut the deficit to three.

Back-to-back singles from Didi Gregorius and Parra accompanied by an error on Fowler allowed Gregorius to cross home with one out in the sixth. Goldschmidt walked before Montero stayed down on a 1-2 curveball and slapped it into center that pushed Parra across to make it a one-run game.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Jerome Williams replaced Tony Sipp, who moved to right field on the switch and then came back on to pitch after Williams issued a walk to Goldschmidt.

Sipp struck out Montero and Kyle Farnsworth toed the slab to strike out Martin Prado swinging for the third out.

Altuve stole second with two outs in the ninth, then Singleton singled to right and Parra fired a laser to the plate that allowed Montero to tag Altuve just before he hit home to keep it a one-run game.

Chad Qualls allowed a two-out double to Ender Inciarte, but worked around it with a strikeout of Chris Owings to record his eighth save of the season.
