Recap: Chicago Cubs vs. NY Yankees

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees scored two runs in the ninth inning to tie the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, then two more in the 13th to win the finale of a two-game series, 4-2.

Only one run came home on a hit.

The Yankees, stymied by Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija for seven innings, scored two on a botched double play in the ninth and got the go-ahead tally on a Jose Veras wild pitch in the 13th.

The Yankees, who will remain in Chicago to play the White Sox, had 13 hits in the game -- all singles -- and snapped a two-game slide.

The Cubs had a three-game winning streak snapped, which included a 6-1 win in the series opener on Tuesday when they became the first major league team to beat Yankees rookie Masahiro Tanaka.

They continued to let down Samardzija, who has gone 16 starts without a win, including 10 outings this season despite leading the majors with a 1.46 ERA.

The right-hander gave up just four hits and continued to receive paltry run support. He allowed three runs or fewer for the 13th consecutive start but remains winless since last Aug. 24.

The Cubs have scored just 20 runs in the 10 games Samardzija has started this season.

"What can I say to him? I can say you did a great job. You did everything you can do. Again, it's no consolation to him," said Cubs manager Rick Renteria. "But it doesn't take away from his efforts."

Yankees righty Chase Whitley, in his second career major-league start, gave up a run on six hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings.

Brendan Ryan led off the 13th with a single, Yangervis Solarte followed with a walk and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Preston Claiborne (2-0) in the pitcher's first major league at-bat.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he wasn't sure if Claiborne, a 26-year-old right-hander, had worked on hitting at all.

"We passed him the message of what we wanted: Just bunt the ball in front of the plate and the grass will kill it," said Girardi.

Veras (0-1) nearly hit the next batter, John Ryan Murphy, with a wild pitch that scored Ryan, and Murphy dropped a bloop single into right field to drive in the second run.

David Robertson gave up a one-out single to Welington Castillo but stranded him at second base in the bottom of the 13th to pick up his ninth save.

Earlier, Mark Teixeira led off the ninth inning with a single against Hector Rondon before Brian McCann walked and Solarte singled to load the bases.

Both runs scored after Ichiro Suzuki's ground ball to shortstop Starlin Castro, who threw to second base for the first out as Teixeira trotted home. Darwin Barney's throw to first was wide of the bag to the outfield side, and skipped into foul territory, letting pinch-runner Ryan score the tying run.

The Cubs loaded the bases with three consecutive singles off Whitley in the fourth inning and took a 1-0 lead on Mike Olt's sacrifice fly to center.

Emilio Bonifacio led off the fifth with a triple but was stranded at third. Dellin Betances got the last two outs of the inning after relieving Whitley.

Batting for Samardzija, Ryan Kalish hit a one-out triple in the seventh inning and scored on a Bonifacio squeeze bunt, sliding in ahead of the scoop throw by pitcher Adam Warren to make it 2-0.

The Cubs loaded the bases later in the seventh, but Derek Jeter turned an inning-ending double play for New York, stepping on second and throwing Castro out at first.

Game Notes

The Yankees went 3-for-18 with runners in scoring position in the two-game series and left 23 men on base ... Claiborne gave up one hit in 1 2/3 innings ... The Cubs start a 10-game road trip in San Diego on Thursday with the opener of a four-game set.
