Recap: Seattle vs. Kansas City

Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Alcides Escobar hit a grand slam and Johnny Giavotella had a three-run shot to help guide the Kansas City Royals to a 9-7 win over the Seattle Mariners in the finale of a four-game set from Safeco Field.

Danny Valencia had two hits with two runs scored and Alex Gordon recorded three hits and two runs for the Royals, who salvaged a series split with Sunday's victory. Eric Hosmer doubled twice and Lorenzo Cain drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

After Jeremy Guthrie was tagged for seven runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings, five Kansas City relievers combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings on just three hits. Louis Coleman (1-0) earned the win after retiring the side in the sixth, and Greg Holland picked up his ninth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Dustin Ackley went 3-for-4 and homered twice and Kyle Seager went yard for Seattle, while Brad Miller drove in a pair of runs in defeat. All nine Mariners starters had at least one hit.

Roenis Elias started for Seattle and gave up five runs -- three earned -- on nine hits in five innings. Danny Farquhar (1-1) surrendered four runs in his only inning of relief to absorb the loss.

Valencia and Gordon started the second inning with singles, and Seager's error on a Cain grounder loaded the bags for Escobar, who drilled a fastball over the wall in left for his second homer of the season and an early 4-0 lead.

The Mariners went up with two straight three-run innings. Miller drove in a pair with a double to right in the bottom of the third after Ackley opened the stanza with a home run to center.

Justin Smoak's error at first allowed Giavotella to score in the top of the fourth to make it 5-3, but Seager tied the score with a two-run blast in the bottom of the frame and Ackley followed with his second of the game.

Ackley homered in three straight plate appearances going back to Saturday.

Seattle's lead stretched to 7-5 following Corey Hart's fifth inning RBI single to center. The margin held until a four-run top of the seventh put the Royals back in front for good.

Hosmer led off the frame against Farquhar with a ground-rule double to left, and a pair of walks following Billy Butler's strikeout loaded the bases for Cain. Cain cut the deficit to one with his sacrifice to center, and Giavotella followed with a no-doubter to left-center.
