Recap: Boston vs. Cincinnati

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Middlebrooks capped a two-run eighth inning rally with a go-ahead RBI single, lifting the Boston Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night to finish a two-game sweep.

Boston won the opener of the two-game series Tuesday on Grady Sizemore's RBI hit off the base of the Green Monster in the 12th inning.

It was only the third regular-season series between the teams since Cincinnati beat Boston in the 1975 World Series.

In the finale, the Reds took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning after chasing Boston starter Jake Peavy from the game, but the Red Sox rallied.

Mike Napoli drew a walk off Manny Parra, went to second base when J.J. Hoover (1-4) walked Jonny Gomes and scored the tying run when A.J. Pierzynski's hit bounced into the seats in shallow right field for a ground-rule double.

After Hoover intentionally walked Jackie Bradley Jr., Middlebrooks slapped a hit up the middle for the go-ahead run.

"For his own confidence...it was good to see (Middlebrooks) come through," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

Koji Uehara struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning to pick up his eighth save and Craig Breslow (2-0) got the win for a scoreless eighth inning.

Peavy was charged with three runs on four hits and four walks in six-plus innings and Boston finished 5-3 on an eight-game homestand.

Reds starter Mike Leake went seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks but remained winless in his last four starts.

Skip Schumaker stroked a first-pitch fastball into the visitors' bullpen in the third inning for his first home run in more than nine months, giving the Reds a 2-0 lead. It also scored Chris Heisey, who led off the inning with a double.

They were Cincinnati's only two hits through six innings.

"We haven't been able to break things open and create separation," Reds manager Bryan Price said.

The Red Sox sent eight batters to the plate and tied the score in the sixth inning. David Ortiz with a single and Napoli with a double drove in the runs.

Boston called on Chris Capuano to relieve Peavy in the seventh after the Reds loaded the bases with no outs on Todd Frazier's double, Brayan Pena's single and Ryan Ludwick's walk.

Roger Bernadina grounded out to force in a run and give Cincinnati a 3-2 lead. He was the only batter Capuano faced. Burke Badenhop got the last two outs.
