Recap: St. Louis vs. Chicago Cubs

St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Carpenter and Jon Jay each knocked in two runs as the St. Louis Cardinals cruised past the Chicago Cubs, 10-4, in the middle installment of a three-game series.

Matt Adams hit a solo homer for the Cardinals, who bounced back after losing in extra innings on Friday. Adam Wainwright (2-1) got the start and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out eight over seven innings.

"It was nice to get some runs for Adam and let him do his thing," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.

Prior to Saturday's game, the Cardinals and senior vice president and general manager John Mozeliak agreed to a two-year contract extension.

Junior Lake hit a solo homer for the Cubs, who went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded five. Carlos Villanueva (1-3) gave up nine runs on 10 hits over three-plus innings.

Lake hit the first pitch of the game over the wall in left.

But the Cardinals took control with a four-run second. Adams led off the frame with a blast to right. Yadier Molina's infield single and Allen Craig's single to right put men on first and second. Daniel Descalso, Wainwright and Carpenter followed with three straight RBI singles.

"Things unraveled quick," said Villanueva. "They're a good team and they took advantage of my mistakes."

The Cubs scored once in the fourth when Anthony Rizzo scored on Starlin Castro's groundout.

St. Louis responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame. Descalso doubled and Wainwright reached first on a sacrifice bunt. Both runners scored on singles from Carpenter and Kolten Wong. Carpenter crossed the plate when Holliday reached base on a fielder's choice. Chris Rusin came in from the bullpen and eventually gave up a two-run single to Jay.

Chicago scored a pair of runs in the sixth when Nate Schierholtz and Ryan Sweeney hit RBI doubles.

A run crossed the plate on Molina's groundout in the bottom half of the inning.
