Recap: San Francisco vs. Colorado

San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner tossed six innings and stroked a fourth-inning grand slam en route to a career-high five runs batted in at the plate in the San Francisco Giants' 6-5 win over the Colorado Rockies to open a three-game set.

Colorado led 3-0 after 2 1/2 innings before Bumgarner put the Giants on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. Pablo Sandoval singled to start the fourth, Michael Morse walked and Brandon Hicks got hit by a pitch to load the bags with two outs for Brandon Crawford, who drew a walk to force in a run. Bumgarner stepped up and took the first pitch he saw, a belt-high fastball, over the fence in left for a 6-3 lead.

The Rockies put a run across in the sixth on Charlie Culberson's RBI double and a run in the eighth on a Charlie Blackmon pinch-hit RBI single, but Sergio Romo struck out the side in the ninth for his third save of the season.

"We're going to battle every night," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss.

Bumgarner (2-0), who allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out seven, had two career home runs entering Friday's tilt, both in 2012. He became the second pitcher in franchise history to hit a grand slam since moving to San Francisco in 1958. Shawn Estes did it in 2000.

"That's quite a night, 5 ribbies," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He wasn't quite as sharp (as usual), and he found a way to win the game."

His counterpart Jorge De La Rosa (0-2) surrendered six runs on four hits, lasting just 4 1/3 innings for Colorado in the setback.

Josh Rutledge had three hits for the Rockies, Nolan Arenado and Brandon Barnes had two hits apiece and Carlos Gonzalez went deep for the fourth time this season. His third-inning home run made it 3-0.

Game Notes

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (tight right quad) and catcher Wilin Rosario (sore right wrist) were both scratched prior to the game. Tulowitzki was used as a pinch-hitter in the ninth ... Colorado outhit San Fran, 11-6, but went just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
