Blue Jays avoid arbitration with Rasmus, two others

Toronto, ON ( - The Toronto Blue Jays avoided salary arbitration with three players Friday, signing one-year deals with outfielder Colby Rasmus and pitchers Esmil Rogers and Brett Cecil.

Rasmus will make $7 million for the 2014 campaign, while Rogers and Cecil will receive $1.85 and $1.3 million, respectively, next season.

Rasmus batted .276 with 22 home runs and 66 RBI over 118 games for the Blue Jays last season, his second full campaign in Toronto since being acquired via trade from St. Louis on July 27, 2011.

A first-round pick (28th overall) of the Cardinals in 2005, the 27-year-old Rasmus has batted .248 with 98 homers and 312 RBI in 689 games over five seasons with St. Louis and Toronto.

Rogers made a career-high 20 starts in 2013 and went 5-9 with a 4.77 ERA in 44 games overall. The 28-year-old right-hander owns a career 16-21 record and a 5.52 ERA in 158 games, including 42 starts, over five seasons with Colorado, Cleveland and Toronto.

Cecil, a first-round pick (38th overall) of the Blue Jays in 2007, thrived out of the bullpen last season, going 5-1 with a 2.82 ERA and one save over 60 relief appearances.

The 27-year-old left-hander owns a career 33-27 record with a 4.56 ERA in 147 games, including 74 starts, over five seasons with Toronto.
