Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Young, who spent the majority of his career with the Texas Rangers before a two-club detour last year, made his retirement official on Friday.

The Dallas Morning News was first to report on Thursday that the Rangers' all-time leader in games played (1,823) and hits (2,230) decided to call it quits after 13-plus seasons.

"At no point was I disappointed in the offers I had this offseason," Young stated about his choice at a press conference at the Ballpark in Arlington. "It was 13 of best years in my life. I figured it out here, and was always hopeful I answered the bell. The last four or five years here, that was a gift."

Young was pried away from the Rangers by the Phillies, who acquired him on Dec. 9, 2012 in exchange for right-handed pitchers Josh Lindblom and Lisalverto Bonilla. He hit .276 with eight homers and 42 RBI in 126 games for a struggling Phillies club before being dealt to the Dodgers with cash considerations for left-handed pitcher Rob Rasmussen on Aug. 31.

The 37-year-old finished with a .279 average, eight homers and 46 RBI over 147 games.

Since breaking in with Texas at the end of the 2000 campaign, Young has compiled 185 homers, 441 doubles, 1,030 runs batted in and 2,375 hits while batting .300 over 1,970 major-league appearances. He led all of baseball with 221 hits in 2005 -- the same year he led the AL with a .331 average -- and compiled 213 hits in 2011 to lead the majors once more.

A seven-time All-Star (2004-09, 2011), Young was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 1997 amateur draft.

"He was the ultimate teammate. He always knew the proper things to say," noted Rangers manager Ron Washington, whom Young played for from 2007-12. "He created the atmosphere in the clubhouse. His attitude every single day was exemplary. Baseball is going to miss Michael Young."
