Chicago, IL ( - The Chicago Cubs named Rick Renteria their new manager on Thursday.

Renteria, who has no prior managerial experience in the majors, agreed to terms on a three-year contract with club options in 2017 and 2018. He becomes the Cubs' third skipper since Lou Piniella retired late in the 2010 season, following brief stints by Mike Quade and Dale Sveum.

The 51-year-old Renteria joins the Cubs after spending the past six seasons as a member of the San Diego Padres' coaching staff. He served as the first base coach from 2008-10 before taking over the bench coach duties the last three years.

A California native, Renteria was a minor league manager in the farm systems of the Marlins and Padres for eight years.

Selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the 1980 draft, the former infielder batted .237 in 184 career major league games with the Pirates, Mariners and Marlins.

The Cubs were 127-197 in two seasons under Sveum, including a 66-96 mark in 2013.
