Denton, TX ( - North Texas head football coach Dan McCarney has signed a five-year extension with the school.

McCarney, who took over the Mean Green program in November 2010, will become one of the highest-paid coaches in Conference USA with the total package worth $3.625 million.

"I'm extremely appreciative of (athletic director) Rick Villarreal and president Neal Smatresk for their support and loyalty," said McCarney in a statement Thursday. "Our collective vision is to keep the Mean Green football program rolling, to strive for new heights and to add special chapters to the history books each year. I am so honored each day to lead this program at such a special university and community."

McCarney is 18-19 in his three years at North Texas, including a mark of 9-4 in 2013. The Mean Green capped last season with a 36-14 win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The 60-year-old Iowa City native was also the head coach at Iowa State from 1995-2006. He guided the Cyclones to a record of 56-85 with five bowl appearances in 12 seasons, leaving as the winningest coach in Iowa State history.

After his stint in Ames, McCarney was an assistant head coach at South Florida for a year and an assistant head coach at Florida for three seasons before joining the Mean Green.
