Recap: Boise State vs. San Diego St

Boise, ID (SportsNetwork.com) - Jay Ajayi ran for three touchdowns in the second half as the Boise State Broncos battled back to capture a 38-29 win over the San Diego State Aztecs in Mountain West Conference play at Albertsons Stadium.

Ajayi carried the ball 31 times and finished with 134 yards for the Broncos (8-2, 5-1 MWC) as they posted their fifth win in as many games. Quarterback Grant Hedrick converted 19-of-28 for 187 yards and a score, but was also picked off twice.

The Aztecs (5-5, 3-3) were led by Donnel Pumphrey who ran for a game-high 147 yards and two scores on 24 carries, but in the final minutes when the team desperately needed points he was curiously on the sidelines. Quarterback Quinn Kaehler hit on 17-of-29 for 173 yards and a score, but was sacked twice and tossed a pick as the team lost for the second time in three outings.

The Aztecs opened with a 20-0 lead in the first half as Donald Hageman knocked through field goals of 41 and 30 yards in the first and second quarters, respectively. In between, Pumphrey found his way into the end zone on a 32- yard run, capping a 10-play, 87-yard drive.

Midway through the second frame Kaehler found Dani Brunskill for a six-yard TD pass play, leaving Boise State with a huge hole to dig themselves out of.

Before intermission, the Broncos showed signs of life as Dan Goodale hit a 21- yard field goal at the 3:25 mark and with only 17 seconds until the end of the half, Hedrick hit Thomas Sperbeck with a 14-yard TD to cut the deficit to 20-10.

San Diego State managed to respond early in the third with a 44-yard field goal from Hageman, but then Ajayi went on the attack for the hosts, delivering three straight touchdowns.

Ajayi crossed the goal line on runs of five, three and 10 yards in a span of about eight minutes in order to move BSU to a 31-23 advantage with 11:23 to play in the fourth.

Refusing to go away quietly, SDSU turned to Pumphrey who found his way down the right side for a 34-yard TD, but the Aztecs then attempted a two-point conversion and Chase Price was taken down short of the goal line with less than nine minutes left on the clock.

Boise State then went on the attack once again and turned to Hedrick to give the Broncos some breathing room. The quarterback capped off a lengthy 14-play, 70-yard drive with a 13-yard gallop into the left corner of the end zone to move the hosts out to a 38-29 advantage with only two minutes remaining.

Needing a minor miracle, the Aztecs took a page out of the Boise State book of tricks and tried running a hook-and-lateral play on 4th-and-25, but the ball ended up being flipped out of bounds and from there the Broncos were able to run out the clock.

The visitors finished the night with 357 yards of total offense, but also hurt themselves with eight penalties for loss of 75 yards.
