Recap: New Mexico vs. Boise State

Albuquerque, NM ( - Grant Hedrick passed for 367 yards and four touchdowns, and also ran in a pair of scores as the Boise State Broncos survived a 60-49 offensive assault against the New Mexico Lobos in a Mountain West Conference battle at University Stadium.

Hedrick completed 21-of-32 passing in the contest with four scores, and rushed for 131 yards and two more touchdowns on 15 carries for Boise State (7-2, 4-1 MWC), which has won four straight. Jay Ajayi carried the ball a game-high 33 times for 177 yards and two touchdowns, while Shane Williams-Rhodes caught a pair of touchdowns in the win.

Teriyon Gipson rushed 24 times for a game-best 205 yards and three touchdowns in the loss for New Mexico (3-6, 1-4), which was the third defeat in the team's last four games. Jhurell Pressley added 154 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries in the contest.

New Mexico got on the board first when Pressley ran New Mexico's first offensive play 75 yards to the end zone 11 seconds into the contest, giving the Lobos a 7-0 edge. But just 12 seconds later, Hedrick found Ajayi on Boise State's first offensive play for a 75-yard touchdown connection to knot the score at 7-7.

It was Pressley again that gave New Mexico another lead, as the running back plunged into the end zone from two yards out with 9:07 to play in the opening frame.

Just over four minutes later, Hedrick struck yet again, this time carrying a 13-yard touchdown to even the score at 14-14. But on the ensuing kickoff, Ridge Jones returned Dan Goodale's kick 100 yards for a New Mexico touchdown to put the Lobos ahead once again, this time 21-14.

New Mexico finally created some separation in the offensive driven first quarter when Gipson took a handoff one yard for a touchdown with 1:53 left in the frame.

Ajayi sliced the Lobos lead to 28-21 with a four-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter, capping a six-play drive.

It was Gipson that scored next for New Mexico with 6:36 left to play, giving the Lobos a double-digit lead once again at 35-21.

With 2:47 left in the first half, Hedrick rushed for his second touchdown, this time from 35 yards out, to cut the New Mexico lead to seven points, 35-28.

Jones carried in the fifth rushing score of the first half for New Mexico just 12 seconds after Boise State's touchdown, rushing 75 yards to the end zone for the 42-28 Lobos lead.

Williams-Rhodes capped the high-scoring first half with an eight-yard touchdown reception from Hedrick with 30 seconds to play in the first half. The score once again sliced the New Mexico lead to seven points, 42-35.

Goodale got the scoring started in the second half with a 30-yard field goal for Boise State, cutting the New Mexico lead to 42-38 with 10:13 left in the period.

Gipson ran in his third touchdown of the game with 6:42 to play in the third frame, this time from a yard out, to increase the Lobos' lead.

Goodale connected again on a field goal, this one from 25 yards away, with 2:23 left in the third.

With 11:13 to play in the game, Hedrick found Williams-Rhodes again for a touchdown connection. The 18-yard hookup put the Broncos down by two points, 49-47, with a two-point attempt upcoming. The conversion failed, leaving Boise State down by two.

Boise State took its first lead of the entire game when Hedrick connected with Chaz Anderson on a 36-yard touchdown completion with seven minutes left to play. After another failed two-point conversion, the Broncos led, 53-49.

For insurance, Ajayi ran in a 14-yard touchdown with 38 seconds remaining to increase the Broncos' lead to 60-49 over the Lobos. That is how the scoring ended in the high-octane offensive matchup.

Boise State racked up an impressive 35 first down in the win, adding 674 offensive yards. New Mexico recorded 627 offensive yards in the contest, but only had 18 first downs. The Lobos ran for 505 yards in the loss.
